Juror’s Statement | It was a privilege to review work for the Cambridge Art Association’s 2021 Emerging Artists Exhibition. To emerge is to become apparent or prominent, and in order to emerge as an artist, you must put your work out into the world. I want to thank all the artists who applied and took the time and effort to allow their work to surface.

During the past year, work was not viewable in the way it has been in the past. The pandemic kept us from galleries, museums, and studio visits.  Artists continued to create in their space and there was a pause where the work could sit and develop. As the first emerging artist show at CAA after the pandemic, this show is special in that the idea of emerging takes on new meaning. It is both a term for artists and an action that we are collectively involved in.  While there were many excellent artworks to choose from, the artists selected stood out in the work they are creating through concept and understanding of the medium of their choice. From large paintings to intimate sculpture, I wanted to include a range of making that speaks to the span of art being created in closed studios that is ready to come out into the world to be viewed.
