About the juror | Beth Kantrowitz is an independent curator and art consultant. Beth co-directs Drive-By Projects with Kathleen O’Hara, and has curated a number of exhibitions in and around Boston and New York.

Juror’s Statement | “As an art gallery co-director, I am principally a curator. So when the CAA asked the jurors to select works for two separate exhibitions, as I viewed the submissions online, I found myself naturally sorting submissions into two groups of works. I did not separate the works into traditional categories such as landscapes, portraiture, or abstraction. Rather, I chose works that would be in conversation with one another on the gallery walls, creating two coherent exhibitions. That varied pieces that spoke to me shared a crucial characteristic—the power to elicit a visceral response. Several themes emerged repeatedly among the over 175 submissions. Many of the works were clearly reflecting on, and responding to, life during the pandemic, with its attendant anxiety, loneliness, and loss. Nature was another frequent motif, simultaneously acknowledging centuries of art history and the contemporary moment in which many of us are spending more time outdoors to reduce viral exposures. Whether consciously addressing current events or not, artists and their work cannot help but be influenced by life and the world around them”.
