Award Winning Artists

Juror Statement
It has been a pleasure to work with the CAA community and the many works of art submitted on the occasion of the 69th Members Prize Show. Having spent the day looking carefully at over 200 submitted artworks, which ranged in material, discipline and subject matter, I quickly became aware of just how diverse and committed CAA members are. It is clear the CAA has encouraged, supported, and fostered an important infrastructure in which artists can produce, participate and collaborate within Cambridge and Boston’s unique art world. The fact that this exhibition is in its 69th year speaks a volume within a country that does not always prioritize or support artists. I feel honored to have been asked to participate in this process.

The final works that were chosen are each engaged with contemporary art dialogues, some make pointed art historical references, and all offer rich entry points to an aesthetic conversation about art-making today. I was interested to observe the frequent use of abstraction as a visual language that was employed in a majority of the artworks – from photography, works on paper to painting and assemblage.  Abstraction as a lens in which to interpret, reinterpret, think through and make statements both political and personal has a long held history as a radical language. In other artworks the figure is evoked as a bridge to capture temporality and humane nature. All of the works of this exhibition speak to a commitment to process, experimentation, the expanded gesture and a staunch dedication to making.
