About our juror

Deborah Barlow is a Boston-based visual artist, writer, and curator of images and ideas. Deeply respectful of the intuitive and indefinable nature of creativity, Barlow nudges the verbal and the visual to move a bit closer to the numinous elsewhere. Fiercely independent, she is a free-form thinker and maker.

During the past 50 years she has had over 50 solo exhibitions and many group shows in museums, galleries, universities and institutions in the United States, Europe and the UK. Built by layering pigments, metallics and natural substances, her paintings mirror the complexity of a multi-dimensional world. Art News described her work by saying “one risks confounding the senses even before peeling back the first layer of brusque sensuality that clings to the surface of her paintings…a soulful, sympathetic sensibility that is rare to find in such an obsessive technician.”

Barlow has authored over 1500 essays on her publishing site Slow Muse (slowmuse.com), since its inception in 2006. In addition to artist monographs and reviews, she has contributed to publications and books on creativity, art making, business and entrepreneurship.

Her most recent project is Pell Lucy, a digital collective of international artists. Through purpose-built networks, Pell Lucy brings viewers into a full spectrum of artistic experiences that are intimate, inclusive and memorable.

Juror statement

“What matters is the shape-making impulse, the emergence and convergence of an excitement into a wholeness.” Those words from the late poet Seamus Heaney are a useful mantra for making art as well as viewing it.

And what generosity is embedded in that wisdom. No mention is made of standards or credentials, right paths or wrong ones. It is just the simple admonition to pay attention to that primal impulse, the one that can lead to a wholeness.

Heaney’s words are an invitation into the artist’s terrain. It encourages the heart and mind to stay wide open, to feel at ease with the unknown, to rely on intuition and what is deeply personal. Welcome to the domain of creativity.

Jurying an exhibit is a similar journey. Every work submitted was carefully considered. I took note of the technical mastery, quality of execution, choice of media, how form and content were constructed. That critical assessment is a cerebral process, but it is not the only method for viewing art. There are so many ways to see and feel your way into a work.

Art is most fully comprehended when both thinking and feeling are brought to bear. My tendency is to lean more heavily into what I am experiencing outside the confines of language and linearity.  When I approach a work of art, I am looking for something. Perhaps that something is a particular sense of presence that a work can possess. I do know that what that something is does not fall into the quantifiable, nor is it easily languaged.

The physicist Richard Feynman describes a burning log as the unfurling of many years of sunlight that has been stored in the wood. Works of art have energy stored inside as well. An artist invests hours to bring a work into form–envisioning, intentioning, decision making, mark making, reworking, honing all the parts into perfect balance. Then, when the piece is completed, it offers itself to the viewer. The power that is coiled inside unfurls when a connection is made.

Perhaps some unfurling will happen for you when you spend time with the art that has been chosen for this exhibit. And for those artists whose submissions were not selected this time round, I ask that you wear that lightly and stay with your own shape-making impulse. We are all part of a dynamic, fluid, ever changing landscape. That relentless impermanence is, after all, how the new keeps emerging.
