JUROR STATEMENT

The Members Prize Show was a wonderful challenge! Since there was not a specific theme uniting the work, I was looking for pieces that “spoke” to each other, and it did not take long to see emerging themes. From artworks exploring nature, commenting on climate change, portraying isolation, and celebrating beauty to more formal explorations of color, line, form, and process artists in the exhibition are deeply invested in their work. I am always surprised and excited to see how artists who investigate similar concepts approach them differently. In a  sense, I see the world through their eyes, and it makes me slow down and consider what has captured each artist’s attention. Some of the works are bold, bright and immediately noticeable and some pieces are very subtle and delicate demanding a closer look. I think it is important to create a balance. A successful group exhibition is often the one that allows artworks to shine on their own and yet exist in a dialog with the surrounding pieces.

In addition, I would like to express gratitude to all the artists who submitted work. There was so much truly remarkable art to choose from, and it was not an easy task to make the final decision.
