About {a}temporal | Through diverse mediums, artists share their unique narratives and invite viewers on a storytelling journey. Each artwork – whether lived or imagined, occurring in the past, present, or future – serves as a reflection on the multifaceted ways that individuals communicate stories. In {a}temporal, time-based painting, photography, sculpture, video, graphic design, and mixed-media artwork articulate individual narratives and encourage contemplation.

Artists, this is your opportunity to submit work in a series or installation! We’d love to see collections, groupings, and thematic relationships among the works you enter.

JUROR’S STATEMENT

It has been an honor and a pleasure to jury {a}temporal from the strong pool of submitted artworks. Taking a first look through the work I realized that, although invited, time-based media such as video was not among the wide range of approaches to telling stories taken by the artists. This focused my thinking on the situation of analog presentations of temporality in our current, technology-mediated era and the questions that would frame my selection process emerged: In what ways can the materials and techniques of static works convey temporality? What is the range of narrative strategies and structuring devices used by the artists? Do these analog works acknowledge the techniques and tropes of time-based media? What is the viewer’s role in creating the narrative?

Because this is a CAA member show, I was particularly interested in what affinities and conversations I would find among the artworks and by extension among the members of this community of artists. The artworks in [a]temporal convey narratives of time and memory, loss, language, life during the pandemic, mundane tasks of everyday life, self-discovery, seasons, travel and history which resonate richly with the artworks’ embedded narratives of facture. Together they add up to the synergistic meta-narrative of the exhibit which — without the constraints often inherent in time-based media — the viewer is free to experience on their own terms.
