Alexandra Sheldon and Steve Imrich | Concord Art

37 Lexington Road Concord, MA

February 24 -March 24, 2022

Opening Reception: March 10, Thursday 5:30-7pm

Observing things from above helps me make sense of relationships that I might otherwise miss. To visualize a ‘layout’ like a map allows me to play with information that can be extracted to one layer and abstracted in ways to multiply other effects and meanings beyond those directly observed. The experiments with layering are not as literal as collage, but some of the same process ideas apply to the decisions as the paintings evolve, where intentional definitions meet accidental juxtapositions and develop their own stimulus for a response. Of course, the homogeneity of paint media eliminates the dynamic of overlapping edges, but that challenge to engage within a single surface is something compelling to try. The work in this exhibit includes a variety of investigations, including some sequential observations from a single hike up New Hampshire’s Mt. Lafayette in the fall.

This exhibition includes work from Alexandra Sheldon and CAA member, Steve Imrich.

Crossing Cultures is an art exhibition about family, memory, displacement, and identity from the point of view of six visual artists with roots in five regions: Asia (India and Iran), South America (Peru), North America (Mexico), The Caribbean (Cuba and Haiti) and Europe (Germany). Through the use of vintage family photographs, and the use of different mediums: photography, painting, mixed media and video, these artists uncover their family stories and create complex, multidimensional narratives to reflect upon what they have left behind while shifting countries and at the same time honoring and remembering family traditions and vanishing ways of life.

This exhibition includes several artists including CAA members Astrid ReischwitzClaudia Ruiz GustafsonNilou MoochhalaVivian Poey, and Nicolas Hyacinthe.

Her current focus is the exploration of personal and collective memory influenced by her upbringing in Germany. To learn more about Astrid & her work, check out her website.

Nilou Moochhala’s visual practice (art & design) has been channeled into examining issues of cross-cultural change and transformation through collaging and assemblage techniques. Originally from Mumbai, she has been inspired to juxtapose found objects, memorabilia, and use of language to create social and political narratives, be it in public street spaces or private art galleries.
