Steve Bennett
Bennett Botanical Images (NEW SITE!)
About | Steve Bennett is a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based visual artist who makes small worlds large and large worlds small through macro and close-up photography. He began taking and making photographs 40 years ago in the age of film and transitioned into digital imaging in the mid-90s. Today, he trains his lens on a variety of natural subjects, ranging from flowering plants and barely discernible “microworlds” to expansive landscapes that inspire a sense of the sublime.
Steve’s work has been displayed in solo exhibits as well as juried events sponsored by the Cambridge Art Association, Fort Point Arts Community, Bromfield Gallery, Blue Mountain Gallery, Gallery Twist, 13 Forest Gallery, and others. His work has also been on display in Google’s Kendall Square, Cambridge offices and in the offices of various software, biotech, pharmaceutical, and financial service companies in the Boston area.
Steve is a founding member of Array Contemporary, a Boston-based fine art gallery.

You Don’t Have to Take Orders from the Moon

About | I am reaching out to share my latest accomplishment! I premiered my first short film on Halloween. After a lifetime of dreaming and 6 months of planning we wrapped production on March 11th days before the lockdown.
Throughout quarantine my editor and I worked through zoom for over 170 hours editing. It is finally done and I want to share it with everyone who has been part of my artistic journey this far!
You Don’t Have to Take Orders From The Moon is a short horror film about a tortured woman who must decide how deep into her own darkness she is willing to tread as a looming force promises her everything she has ever wanted.
I’d love for you watch and share with your audience – through your social media or newsletter. This movie is my baby and I am so excited to put it out into the world!
Inspired by Sienese frescoes and particularly Amborgio Lorenzetti’s “City by the Sea” (1340), Andre’s work explores the social contract we humans create between urban environments, our government and nature.

About | This year, Creative Marketplace looks a bit different than it has in past years. Cambridge Arts Open Studios has been re-imagined as an online art market, similar to an Etsy page for local Cambridge artists. This new program is inspired and informed by the past Creative Marketplace programs Cambridge Arts has produced since its launch in 2016.
Building on the Cambridge Arts Challenge, a pilot program that took place in spring 2015, Cambridge Arts applied for and received a multi-year grant from Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Adams Art Program to develop mechanisms to engage cultural economic development using the arts as a primary catalyst. The resulting initiative, Creative Marketplace, is comprised of a suite of programs that boost the visibility of the arts and drive local economic activity.

The StoveFactory Gallery in Charlestown will be dormant over the winter months, so we are creating 2 small temporary semi-private studio workspaces within the gallery from December 15, 2020 through March 15, 2021. The Renters would be using a sectioned part of the gallery space that will be partitioned off with divider walls.The remainder of the gallery space shall remain available for ‘light use’ by studio tenants during dormant months (such as hanging and photographing artwork). There are also two private studios on the third floor that will be available January 1, 2021. Artists and writers are welcomed. Serious inquiries only, please!
The Colorful Grey Portrait Workshop, with Moriah Faith

In this Zoom workshop, we will be deconstructing the portrait by breaking down the planes of the face into shapes that we will visually understand using the “selfie” by focusing on tonal painting and subtle variations resulting in changes of temperature and value. The great thing about this workshop is it is great for beginner and advanced portrait painters alike because it trains you to see shapes and values instead of just “a face” and strengthens observational skills.
