Opening Reception | Wednesday, March 4 from 6-8pm

Submission Deadline | Monday, February 2 at 5pm EST

About SPACES | The Cambridge Art Association invites New England artists +18 to submit work for Spaces, a juried exhibition exploring the places that shape our sense of belonging. Spaces asks artists to consider the environments that define us: What places make you feel rooted, welcomed, or at ease? Are they spaces you’ve discovered through travel – cities, landscapes, or landmarks that left a lasting impression? Or are they the familiar spots you return to again and again, defined by the presence of family, friends, and community? Artists are encouraged to explore how these spaces – whether distant or close to home – carry memory, meaning, and personal connection.

ABOUT THE JUROR

LAUREN SZUMITA

Lauren Szumita (she/her) is the Director of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Art Gallery at the College of the Holy Cross. She previously was the curator at the Fitchburg Art Museum, where she organized Cicely Carew: Quantum Sanctuary (2022), Rania Matar: Oceans at My Door (2023), Paper Town (2023), and FAM’s inaugural façade installation, Gabriel Sosa’s La bodega de mis suenos (ongoing), among others. Prior, she was Curatorial Assistant of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs at Worcester Art Museum where she oversaw the Central Massachusetts Artists Initiative (CMAI) rotation for contemporary, regional artists. Lauren holds an MA in the History of Art and Architecture from the University of Oregon and a BA in Art History from Boston College.

JUROR’S STATEMENT

The submissions for Spaces were a representative sampling of the state of contemporary art in and around New England today. Submissions presented thoughtful and reflective visions of society that encourage dialogue about our shared world. These works introduce poignant reflections on our everyday lives, sometimes offering novel ways to see familiar places, but also offering pathways to spaces unknown and unexplored. Less representational works prompt us to bring our own associations, inviting imaginative possibilities to our world. The works selected were exemplary in their craft, with careful attention paid to mark-making, choice of media, conceptual strength, and contemplative potential. Drawing and painting were prominently represented, showing a commitment to foundational two-dimensional media, but technology and experimentation with media showed artists’ willingness to experiment. With humor, foresight, and imagination, these artists consider personal moments that extend to the familiarity of a universal experience.
