About the Juror
Sayantan Mukhopadhyay

Sayantan Mukhopadhyay is the Associate Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Portland Museum of Art. Most recently, he curated As We Are (2024), an exhibition highlighting emerging artists with connections to Maine. He is currently working on a midcareer retrospective of Maine-based painter Sascha Braunig's work, opening in the fall of 2026. Sayantan has a diverse background in education, publishing, and the visual arts, having worked in New York, Los Angeles, Mumbai, Shanghai, and New Delhi. He holds a BA in art history and comparative literature from Williams College and an MA and PhD in art history from UCLA. His doctoral research focused on queer networks in contemporary art in India at the end of the twentieth century.

Juror’s Statement

It has been just over two years since I moved back to New England after life took me on multiple detours–to New York, India, China, the West Coast, and back. In that time, I have found myself tracing local cartographies of community and care among artists. In Maine, that history is particularly strong: artists share bountifully in each other’s studios and taking pride in the dialogic nature of their practices. It is as inspiring as it is humbling. I witness that here, too, in this incredible call from the CAA. I have had an opportunity to encounter some of the ways—both quiet and overt—that artists are sharing in knowledge, in frustration, in love, and in beauty. It has been a privilege to take a small peek into these intertwined worlds.
