Nicole Winters

Are you self-taught or formally educated in visual art? In 2015, I earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University in affiliation with the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Massachusetts College of Art & Design in 2011, majoring in Printmaking.

What role do you think the artist plays in society? As an art educator, I teach my students that artists play a huge role in our ever changing society— artists participate in and shape contemporary conversation. Artists are critical thinkers, decision makers, and problem solvers. Art allows us to think creatively, develop our personal identities, experience and understand empathy, and express and expand our view of humanity. Art allows us to say what can not be said with words.

How do you choose your subject matter? Is there a recurring theme that carries throughout your work? My work explores both the tangible and elusive means by which we define our ideas of “place”. While not bound to a geographic location or a physical space, within my work are the records of the places we inhabit and inevitably leave behind, the competing realities of the natural and virtual worlds where we dwell, and the dreamed places we invent to escape from our realities.
