Opening Reception + Awards Presentation | Wednesday, May 28 from 6-8pm
Presented at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery & CAA @ University Place
Award Presentation will take place at the Kathryn Schultz Gallery at 7pm
Juror | Dell M. Hamilton, an interdisciplinary artist, writer and independent curator
About Sincerely [Your Name Here] | Sincerely, [Your Name Here] is an opportunity to share your perspective and personal experiences; whether you want to recount a joyful trip, reflect on a significant moment, express a dream, etc. Through painting, sculpture, photography, digital art, mixed media, or any other creative form, we invite you to share your story — honestly and openly — to us, from you.
For this call, the Cambridge Art Association invites artists 18 and older, and based in New England, to submit. All visual media will be considered (2D, 3D, video). Artwork will be installed at the CAA’s Kathryn Schultz Gallery (25 Lowell Street) and CAA @ University Place Gallery (124 Mount Auburn Street) in West Cambridge.
ABOUT THE JUROR
Dell Marie Hamilton is an artist, writer and independent curator whose performances have been presented to audiences in New York at Five Myles Gallery and Panoply Performance Lab. She has extensively presented her work in the New England area including at the Museum of Fine Arts/Boston, Dartmouth College’s Hood Museum of Art, as well as at the Clark Art Institute, where she became the first visual artist -in the Clark’s 64-year-history – to present a performance artwork in their galleries.
Working across a variety of mediums including performance, video, painting and photography, she uses the body to investigate the social and geopolitical constructions of personal memory, gender, history and citizenship. With roots in Belize, Honduras and the Caribbean she frequently draws upon the colonial and folkloric traditions of the region.
Dell is a recipient of the ICA/Boston’s 2021 Foster Prize and her work will be discussed in a forthcoming article by scholar Iyko Day, in the anthology AntiBlackness (eds. Moon-Kie Jung and Joao H. Costa Vargas, Duke University Press). Her most recent curatorial project, “Nine Moments for Now” was presented at Harvard’s Ethelbert Cooper Gallery of African and African American Art, and was ranked by Hyperallergic.com as one of 2018’s top 20 exhibitions in the U.S.
She was also named a grantee of the U.S. Latinx Art Forum’s 2021 inaugural cohort of the Charla Fund, a Ford Foundation-sponsored initiative that provides grants to Latinx artists. A frequent performer in the work of Afro-Cuban artist María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Dell appears in her collaborative video, “When We Gather” which includes choreography and poetry by Okwui Okpokwasili and LaTasha N. Nevada Diggs. She also works at Harvard’s Hutchins Center for African and African American Research where she has held a variety of roles organizing exhibitions, events, and conferences.
JUROR STATEMENT
When approached with the opportunity to jury Sincerely, [Your Name Here] as an invitation for artists to tell their individual stories about places they visited, lived experience, or their feelings about the world – to some extent I took the title of the show literally. I saw it as a chance to discover artists who were earnest in their process.
My methodology was painstaking and the list of artists expanded and contracted as the ideas that bubbled to the surface ebbed and flowed. In truth, I looked for the same things that I look for in my own practice as an artist and a curator. I searched for risk-taking, solemnity, and curiosity.
I wanted to see art that made me wonder and question who the artist was. I wanted to know more about the circumstances that drove their decisions. In paintings with human subjects, I was struck by how the use of color either drew me in or repelled me. On more than one occasion the figurative works with goofy facial expressions, awkward body language, and odd subject matter put a smile on my face. With sculpture and mixed-media I sought out invention in materiality and process. Abstract and photographic work had to provide strong formal compositions. There were also several conceptual works where social commentary and depth were at the forefront. Given the anti-democratic actions that are currently unfolding across our country, this is a potent time to make space for artists whose work was grounded not only in artistic rigor, but more importantly, honesty, and vulnerability.
