Michael Compton

Whitewash, Watercolor

What are your earliest memories of being artistic?  I began drawing as soon as i was able to hold a crayon in my hand.

When did art become a pursuit?  Art has always been a pursuit. Floundering, at the age of 14, My Aunt Fern O’Leary took my to an actual art museum, the Huntington Library in Los Angeles. I was astonished that such paintings were possible. i was humbled and knew I had much to learn.

Are you self-taught or formally educated in visual art?  Both. I studied graphic design, but had a passion for fine art.

How did you first become involved with CAA?  I was included in a National Prize Show years ago and recently joined.

Bride’s Wreath, Oil

In what other ways are you involved in the local art community?  I have a studio on Miller Street in Somerville. We hold biannual open studios.

What role do you think the artist plays in society?  Many roles, depending on the artist. Art needn’t have any obvious point at all. I’m offended when i see heavy handed politics in art. The most effective message, if there has to be one, is done quietly and honestly.

What medium do you currently work in and how did you choose this medium?  oil and watercolor. I adhere to traditional means.

What is your creative process? Where are you finding ideas for your art these days?  I let the subject draw me in. Painting in the realist tradition, I open myself to to the light and beauty found in the world we occupy.

How do you choose your subject matter? Is there a reoccurring theme that carries throughout your work?  it chooses me.

March Landscape, The Old Manse, Oil

In your opinion, what’s your best/favorite piece you’ve made?  the one on my easel now, until it’s replaced by the next one.

What is one of your artistic goals?  To become an overnight sensation at the age of 85.

What’s your favorite place to see art?  regional museums, they always have rarely seen treasures.

What living artists are you inspired by?  Zufar Babbik and many others working in the current plein air movement.

Do you own any art by other artists?  Yes, I try to support artists who display integrity and hard work whenever i can.

Do you have any shows coming up?  Finger Lakes Plein Air in June, The Gallery at Trees place in Orleans, Mass in late August
